Building Sandcastles at The Winds!

July 31, 2008 by garypope

A unique friendship between two families began at The Winds sixteen years ago. For years the Delgado and Morrison families have coordinated their families’ summer vacations so that they could always be at The Winds simultaneously.

It all started when Bill Delgado, a printing and graphics teacher from Twinsburg OH, and his family began building a large sand sculpture on the beach.

Bill (as always) encouraged other children on the beach to join in.

In the midst of the project, the children of the Morrison family, from Detroit MI, introduced their parents, Lisa and Gordon, to the Delgados. They all became fast friends and the rest is history. The sand sculpture that year was to be the first of somewhere over 100 sand castles to be built by the Delgados and the Morrisons.

This year the Delgados returned to The Winds for another go at it with Mary, Katherine, Hunter and others that joined in. Together they created Snoopy, a Sea Turtle and a Fish with sunglasses and a ball cap. And that was just the day shown in video! Every day they created something different.

Send us your funny or interesting videos from your stay at The Winds – maybe we’ll put it on the Beach Club site! Just upload it to YouTube.com and send us the link in an email to: garypope@thewinds.com

we are coming to the isle in a week or so, and was wondering if the Delgado’s had any sculpture building tips. I noticed the girl using a hose to spray it with. who provided the hose and where was it hooked up to? any portion of the beach more suitable than another. Looks like you chose to build just at the lip of the ? rise in the beach. Grateful for any tips you have.

My family has been coming to the winds for over 25 years now, even before I was born making this a special place. I am now 24 years old and I have pictures of me as a baby at the winds.I am sure one day I will be bringing my children to the Winds. A family traditon just doesn’t sum up the experience we have every year at the Winds. The staff has become like family and the beauty of this beach never goes away. Take a look at the plaque in the garden infront of the main pool, it is deticated to my Grandfather who loved the Winds and this beach very much. If you catch my family at the winds, you might get a chance to see my father in action carving wonderful sand sculptures(a different one each day). On the last day we make the ultimate sand castle and with a crowd of 50 or more we light it with sparklers at dusk. It’s tradition to go into calabash for dinner and shopping one day in north myrtle. Sharky’s of course and crabbing on the beach at night. We have witnessed it all from whales, dolphins, turtles laying their eggs, to tropical depressions and the effects of major hurricanes. The beach has changed, the pier knocked down and re-built,and the upper-end of the island has eroded away, but this beach has never lost it’s charm. The friends we have made and the experiences we have had at the winds are not expressible in words.
Thank you to the Winds! We will See you Soon!
