Little Kids Surf Camp
(AGES 6-9)
Little kids surf camp offers a fun-filled introduction to surfing and ocean safety. With a focus on teaching the kids to react properly to ocean currents, waves, and how to read the ocean. The student to teacher ratio is 1 to 1 (avid swimmers may be paired 2 students to 1 instructor). All participants are swim tested to determine their current swim level.
Don’t fear, lessons are held in waist deep and shallower water, staying inside the breaking waves and pushing the campers into white water waves. Instructors are very experienced, and stabilize the surfboard while pushing them into waves to allow kids to stand up more easily and not get frustrated!! Special surfboards made of soft foam are used, the same material as a boogie board with a plastic bottom and plastic fins (much safer than typical fiberglass boards).
If ocean conditions are too rough, they will swim, boogie board, and play games on the beach- safety comes first!! They have a certified ocean lifeguard, and two staff members trained in first aid and CPR certified. After camp, your child will be more confident in their ocean skills, and demonstrate knowledge of ocean currents and how to properly react to them in the future.
Little Kids Surf Camp runs from 8:30 am until 11:00am Monday through Thursday. Camp includes surfboard, expert instruction, tent for shade, snacks and drinks, group photo, and an excellent course in ocean safety.

New Decor & Upgrades Galore!
February 6, 2011 by garypope · Leave a Comment
We’ve been busy at The Winds this Winter transforming the decor of our rooms to the nostalgic beach cottage look that everyone fondly remembers. Accommodations are colorful and cheery looking with a new paint palette.
A number of kitchens and living areas in our suites are getting new cabinets and tile flooring. Furniture, art work and bedding are continually being updated.
Our meeting rooms also received a new look this past summer. Give them a peek on your next visit.
Fitness Room Upgrade
Another improvement at The Winds is the introduction of new commercial grade fitness equipment. We used a certified fitness trainer to help us select the best equipment for our guests.
A Multi Station Selectorized Gym with three workout stations, stationary bikes, a treadmill, steps, free weights, adjustable weight benches, resistance tubing and stability balls are a few items guests can expect to see during their next visit.
Forgot It? No Problem
The Winds is pleased to announce the opening of our seasonal poolside Tiki Shop. The shop is open daily during high occupancy periods so there is no need to get in the car and drive! Our guests can find a variety of items to make their stay at the Winds fun and safe.
We have suntan lotions, oils, sunblock, as well as hats, visors and a selection of fun, colorful t-shirts. Need a camera? We have those also as well as various other items to make your day on the beach fun for the young and the young at heart. Be sure to check it out on your next visit.
Pet Friendly
The Winds has a few rooms and one cottage designated for small pets. Bringing a pet into a room not designated as pet friendly is against NC law.
If you travel without your pet, no problem. “Miss Mittens” our own furry resident cat has lived with us for many years.
She welcomes many families with her presence here at The Winds. Return guests ask for her every year. You can see a video of her on our website: TheWinds.com
Protect The Turtles
For two summers The Winds has participated in the Sea Turtle Protection Program sponsoring nests on the beach.
Our guests participated in a contest to name the Turtles. In 2009 the name chosen was Windy.
Hope, our 2010 Turtle, laid 127 eggs on July 7th. On the night of August 27th 122 hatchlings made their way out to sea.
It was a beautiful thing to experience and we look forward to sponsoring a nest for 2011.
Weddings, Meetings, Reunions
In 2010 The Winds hosted over 50 Weddings and three vow renewals. Our couples originated from California to New York and all points in between. In August the Winds weddings went international.
We hosted a bride from Bulgaria, a couple from Switzerland, a groom from Bogota and his bride from Newcastle England. We had guests from Bulgaria, the Philippines, Canada, Barbados, Bogota, Columbia, South America, and Switzerland. Meetings, retreats and family reunions were also held.
Plans are underway for our 2011 season. If you would like more information contact Cheryl Wilson at 800-334-3581. Or go to: http://thewindsweddings.com
From the Golf Desk
In November The Winds wrapped up another busy golf season with 23rd International Tee Party Tournament. We hosted 60 players from both sides of the Atlantic for a week of golf and special activities.
The Americans took home the cup this year but our British friends have already made reservations for Oct. 29, – Nov. 5, 2011, to attempt to take the cup across the Atlantic!
2011 will see the return of our most popular packages like Winter Sizzler, March Madness and Fall Fore Golf as well as the addition of Stay and Play 3 night packages. Of courses our Free Summer Golf Program is always popular too!

The Sugar Shack – Authentic Jamaican Restaurant
September 22, 2009 by garypope · Leave a Comment
Make your “tropical escape” to The Winds Resort Beach Club complete with a trip to The Sugar Shack – an authentic Jamaican restaurant -just over the bridge on the mainland.
Sugar Shack features authentic Jamaican home cooking (yes, the chef/owner is Jamaican) in a colorful, intimate setting about a mile from the beach. Amid greenery, tropical artwork and floral table coverings, recorded reggae music adds a lively island feel, while live music is offered on weekends.
The house specialty is a huge steak, marinated, slowly grilled and richly flavored. But the flavorful jerk selections, served with a hot ‘n’ sweet sauce, are the highlight of their delightful menu that also includes Stamp & Go (a traditional spicy cod fritter), Brown Stewed Fish (slowly cooked red snapper) and a curried goat so tender it literally falls off the bone. But be sure someone in your group gets the award-winning baby back ribs.
Nothing is too spicy for the average palate, but imported hot sauce is available if you want to hurt yourself. Some appetizers are enough for a meal, and the Jamaican Sampler is a good introduction. Other offerings include a grilled mango tuna, spiced-just-right crab fritters, homemade soups, great burgers and nightly specials, such as lightly fried coconut shrimp served with mango-pepper marmalade. Then you just need to top it all off with a luscious slice of homemade Key lime pie. Guinness and Red Stripe beer are served. Take-out orders are welcome.
Sugar Shack is one block west of the intersection of Ocean Isle Beach Road, a few yards off N.C. 179. Sugar Shack is open nightly for dinner in summer and Tuesday through Saturday off-season. Live entertainment is featured on Saturday nights. Reservations are strongly suggested.
