After Hurricane Irene passed through our area Sunset Beach resident and author Jacqueline DeGroot was asked by the Guardian of the Kindred Spirit Mailbox to check mailbox as soon as she could.

She found that the dune in front had eroded somewhat leaving it in a precarious position and tilted.

The bench had fallen backward and had become uprooted.

So she began looking for volunteers to help relocate the Kindred Spirit mailbox to a more stable location.

“Jack” (as her friends call her) is not one to sit around waiting for someone else to take action so on a Thursday morning in early September, DeGroot, and a group of friends headed out to Bird Island armed with shovels.

They relocated the mailbox just a few feet from its old location (with the blessing of the Kindred Spirit’s anonymous guardian).

Pictured are volunteer Mailbox Restoration Team members Laura Lewis, Sandy and Kathy Lonsinger, Sharon Maple, Frank Nesmith, Sandy Raymond, Carol and Pete Scott, and Patrick Szymansk.

The volunteers then proceeded to re-situate the wooden bench that normally sits beside it and generally cleaned things up.

The notebooks of the Kindred Spirit are once again ready for new handwritten messages from beachcombers, thinkers and day dreamers of all kinds.

By the way, if you’re not familiar with DeGroot’s books, check out this website: http://islands-art.com

So What Is The Kindred Spirit Mailbox?

Know one knows who placed the mailbox on Bird Island (an uninhabited island at the west end of Sunset Beach, NC). The person who put it there wrote “Twenty seven years ago I walked the tide line of Bird Island. In the distance – right on the low tide line – I saw the silhouette of a rural mailbox. However, I never could reach it – for it was a mirage. The very next weekend, I “planted” the original Kindred Spirit mailbox”.

The mailbox is filled with notebooks, pens and pencils along with the stories and tales of all the travelers who’ve journeyed to this place. Each entry begins with the phrase “Dear Kindred Spirit.”

These journals are filled with prayers, wishes, thanksgivings, personal stories and more – each writer adding his or her own bits of wisdom to the collection.

An empty wooden park bench sits just in front of the Kindred Spirit mailbox, offering its oceanfront seat to visitors who’ve journeyed to this spot so they’re able to read the stories and share their own.

Then, once the notebooks and journals are complete, they’re mailed to their mysterious owner – the Kindred Spirit – who lovingly reads, collects and saves each spiralbound book of stories.

So Where Is The Kindred Spirit Mailbox?

If you’d like to visit the Kindred Spirit mailbox yourself, come over the Sunset Beach bridge, take a right at the oceanfront. From the last public Sunset Beach access make a right and head southwest. It’s about an hour walk there and back. Like most things in life, it’s about the journey, especially in a world where every thing else seems instantaneous. After a mile and a quarter, you’ll see a second flag pole, and you’ll find the mailbox there at the foot of it.

So if you’re feeling like you just need to escape from the daily grind, go and get away. Watch a sunset, hold hands with someone you love and maybe even write a letter to someone you’ve never met.

A new “Virtual” Kindred Spirit Mailbox is now up at: http://thekindredspirit.net/the-mailbox-is-here - Now you can access The Kindred Spirit from anywhere in the world!

All of our little sea turtle friends are doing just fine according to Deb and Jim Boyce,
Island Coordinators for the Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization.

This includes “Tiki the Turtle”, The Sea Turtle sponsored by The Winds!

Deb reports that they checked all of the nests yesterday morning and all nests are intact!

“It’s possible that Nest #16 (McKenney’s Beach House) may have hatched during the storm because it was showing signs of activity prior to Irene. Nest #13 (Turtle Babes) had some hatchlings out overnight last night – our rider spotted baby tracks this morning. So all is well.”

The Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization provides, through appropriate management activities and education, a safe and protected environment for all sea turtles that frequent the island of Ocean Isle Beach.

They accomplish this by working with the Town of Ocean Isle Beach, its residents, businesses and visitors.

This year The Winds once again signed up to sponsor a Sea Turtle nest and as always we asked you, our guests, to submit your suggestions for a name… and you guys had some really great ones. Once all of the names were in the winning name was chosen by votes cast by The Winds’ office staff.

We actually had two people suggest the name so we’ve got to give them both credit:

Both Cindy Dupuis and Gretchen Krist had the same great name in mind!

We thank everyone who took the time to submit their suggestions – please help us again next year!

Tiki The Turtle laid her nest on July 28 at 215 West First St. (West end of Ocean Isle Beach – see map below!).

Jim and Deb Boyce, Island Coordinators who are licensed by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission, Non-game and Endangered Species section, work with a team of approximately 50 trained volunteers in a year-round effort to protect sea turtles.

Volunteers are especially active between May and late September, when female sea turtles dig their nests and lay their eggs. In addition to identifying and marking nests on Ocean Isle Beach, volunteers also protect hatchlings from predators, transport sick and injured sea turtles to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at Topsail Island, and educate the public about these amazing creatures.

For more information, visit www.oibseaturtles.org. Deb Boyce has told us that so far this year there have been 17 nests discovered and when another one is identified it will be designated as our “adopted nest”.

Last year’s Winds’ Turtle was named ”Windy”. She came ashore the night of June 28th and laid a nest full of 86 eggs!!!!

Deb Boyce told us that 50 days from the date that the eggs are laid they will begin to watch for a ‘boil over’ or mass hatching to begin and usually they hatch around the 55th day. However if the hot weather continues they could hatch as early as 49 – 50 days from being laid.

These photos are actually of Windy heading back out to sea after digging her nest in the sand, laying her eggs and then covering them up to protect them.

The photos were taken by the the Zvoch family from Michigan who were visiting Ocean Isle Beach on vacation. We’d like to thank them for sharing these incredible photos with us!

He worked in the advertising business when it was in its hay day, long before photoshop. His illustrations depict a time of detectives, mobsters, guns, mystery and true romance; a doe-eyed heroine with a gun hidden in her purse. His drawings are reminiscent of a simpler time we sometimes long for, when men wore suits and women dressed to the nines.

He retired from the fast-paced New York life and moved to coastal Ocean Isle Beach where he opened The Winds Resort. He loves the coastal life but he still takes time to do his art, his life’s passion.

WRAL.com out of Raleigh has featured the advertising guru in an episode of The Tarheel Traveler, check out his interview on the link below and find out what it was like to be a real madman.

By Miller Pope – From the earliest days of European exploration to the golf courses and beach resorts in this fascinating and fast-growing region, Brunswick County has attracted settlers, invaders, and visitors of all descriptions.

In these pages you’ll read about Steve Bonnet, the “Gentleman Pirate,” who hid his ships in Brunswick’s moss-draped creeks but unfortunately underestimated the ebbing tide; Coast Guard mounted on horse-back patrolling Ocean Isle’s beaches hunting for spies landed by German submarines; “Mrs. Calabash,” who’s said to have lent her name to the famous sign-off for Jimmy Durante’s classic radio shows; and Topsy the Elephant, who swam for the Brunswick riverbank after breaking loose from circus handlers in the 1920s.

Follow the struggles and victories that shaped Brunswick County, from the first contact of Europeans with native Americans, to successive administrations of the Lords Proprietors, the royal governors, the British crown, and the leaders of a new nation—many at whom hailed from this small but influential corner of North Carolina. Discover Brunswick’s rich Civil War history, scenic roadways and waterways and current-day towns and townships.

Tales of the Silver Coast, recounts the tales of privateers and plantation owners, politicians and Prohibition rum-runners and the many colorful people and diverse places of southeastern North Carolina.
