Mittens The Cat

May 19, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

“Mittens” The Cat has been a fixture at The Winds for years and as usual she has been expending as little energy as possible.

Walking past her yesterday at The Winds I couldn’t resist taking this picture.

She was obviously posing and wanting to please her many fans out there so…

Here she is – Ladies, gentlemen and children of all ages: Mittens The Cat!

Here are some videos form last summer showing Mittens doing what she does best..nothing much at all!

Here she is on a lazy day lounging around The Winds Resort Beach Club . “Its a rough job but someone’s got to do it” said Mittens when we spoke to her later in the day.

Mittens showed up one day as a kitten and settled into her new home. She earns her keep by running pesky varmints away from The Winds. The rest of the time she either sleeps or entertains the children by permitting them to love on her.

The Winds had Mittens fixed and she has all of her shots up to date at all times so she is perfectly safe to be around. She is very gentle and loves to be loved!

The Old Sunset Bridge

March 8, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Sunset Beach swing bridge linked the nearby island of Sunset Beach, NC with the mainland since 1958.

Opening hourly and on demand, and occasionally breaking down, it has served locals and visitors for over fifty years.

With the opening of the Mannon C. Gore Bridge last October, the little bridge was decommissioned.

The old bridge is being saved privately by a non-profit society with support from individuals and businesses. They need both volunteer support and financial support.

With support from many who have donated their time and money, a group has been able to keep the bridge and tender house and relocate it to a site on dry land where it can serve as a museum and gathering place for the community.

On the morning of January 21, 2011  the Tender House was being moved from the barge to join the ramps and center section of the bridge in its new home!

You can can remember the bridge with a Giclée Commemorative Print by nationally renowned local nature photographer and artist, Ken Buckner.

Rescued Pelicans Released

March 7, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

With families, including children, looking on two recuperated pelicans were released back into the wild on Saturday on the dock at Sharky’s Waterfront Restaurant on Ocean Isle Beach. The pelicans had been injured by frostbite and were rescued earlier this winter.

According to Janie Withers of Paws-Ability, a nonprofit group that provides financial support for assorted animal causes in Brunswick County, this winter has been very harsh for dogs and cats living outside as well as the shore birds with many actually having had frostbite on their feet this year.

The two pelicans were treated and recuperated at the Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter on nearby Oak Island, NC.

Sea Biscuit manager Mary Allen Rogers let Paws-Ability be part of the pelicans’ release.

In 2010, Paws-Ability raised and donated funds to help build a roof over a portion of the wildlife shelter for the protection of the birds in its care. Withers described it as an emergency situation that Paws-Ability was able to help with after Sea Biscuit had run out of funds.

Withers said the occasion offered a good science lesson as well as an opportunity to “gently pet” the birds before they are let go.

Those in attendance also had a chance to learn about the Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter and what it does for injured birds in our area.

Rogers stated that rescuers like to release birds in the same area where they were found, because they’re social and so they can “flock together.”

A New Game!

February 7, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Winds is adding a new game to the numerous free amenities and fun activities for all ages offered on-site. Now, in addition to offering guests two outdoor pools (one indoor pool), numerous whirlpool spas, exercise and fitness room, bicycles, free summer golf, pool volleyball, outdoor table tennis, shuffleboard, beach bocce, swings for children, pool basketball, beach volleyball and horseshoes we have added a Cornhole game!

The Cornhole game is typically played more in the northeast and in the west than it is in the south, but there are pockets of Cornhole players everywhere.

The game is gaining in popularity, and more people are taking an interest in how it is played. They even organize tournaments in some places where Cornhole players can get together and enjoy a day of playing the game together. They can win cash and prizes, and they can also simply have a great time with their friends and with fellow Cornhole players.

The History Behind the Cornhole Game:

Not everyone knows, though, how the game came about. Some think it started in Europe, and others think that it started in the United States. Those who believe it came about in America also cannot agree on which city and state was the first home of the game. Some believe that it was Chicago, Illinois, and others believe that it was Cleveland, Ohio. The two cities have quite a rivalry taking place about it, and there are good-natured arguments from both sides regarding it. ??

The people in Cleveland, Ohio often call it the Cornhole game, and the people in Chicago, Illinois generally call it the bean bag toss. Either way, it is argued that it is the same game. Overall, it is, but there is a difference that not everyone is aware of.

The official board for the bean bag toss or the bean bag game is two feet by three feet, and the official board for the Cornhole game is two feet by four feet. Some people, however, play what they still call the Cornhole game with the smaller board, and they do this because the board is easier to maneuver. It can be carried around in the bed of a pickup truck and also in the trunk of a medium-sized or larger car. This means that it is easy to take to parties, tailgating get-togethers, and other events, making it more enjoyable more often for a larger group of people.

From such a small beginning in a northern town, it has become a sensation in many parts of the country where it was previously unheard of. ??The game got its name because people used cloth bags filled with corn, and they tried to throw them through a hole in a wooden board. Getting the bag through the hole scored points, as did getting the bag to sit on the board and not fall off, although these were not worth as much. In time, the game changed somewhat. The bags were made of different types of cloth and sewn on machines, the boards were made of plastic sometimes, although they can still be made of wood as well.

People also started filling the bags with plastic pellets or small, round plastic beads, because these could get wet and not become damaged. Corn or dried beans do not do well when they have gotten wet, and this can make the Cornhole bags unusable. The game, however, continues to remain basically the same and continues to have many followers.

Be sure to try it out next time you’re at The Winds!
