The 2009 NC Oyster Festival is Coming!

October 17-18, 2009 marks the 29th anniversary of the NC Oyster Festival, once again hosted by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.
Awarded North Carolina Event of the Year 2007 by the North Carolina Association of Festivals and Events, the 29th Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival will feature:  Live entertainment, a road race, a surf contest, kids area, over 120 arts & crafts vendors and 13 food vendors, North Carolina Oyster Shucking Championships and an Oyster Stew Cook-off.

Each year, over 45,000 people, including locals and visitors, attend the North Carolina Oyster Festival to pay homage to the mighty mollusk.

If you’re not a fan of the oyster don’t let that stop you. There are all kinds of food vendors with everything from Greek gyros to cheesesteaks to homemade ice cream (not to mention funnel cakes, cotton candy and burgers and hot dogs).

The Winds tends to book up way ahead for this nationally recognized festival so make plans and reservations as soon as possible! Here are some of the details:

Entertainment:
The music will be great on both days with everything from Carolinas Beach Music to blues and current and classic rock. Come enjoy good food and then take a seat in the stands for some great live music and dancing (if you’re not too full!)

Oyster Festival Annual Road Race: Saturday, October 17, 2008 at Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. The race will feature a 1 mile fun run, 5K and 10K run on flat asphalt with some areas of hard sand.
Times:

Fun Run – 7:30 a.m.
5K and 10K – 8:00 a.m.
Late registration and packet pick-up begins at 6:30 a.m.
Refreshments and awards following the race.

North Carolina Oyster Shucking Championship: Saturday, October 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Each year, amateur and professional shuckers gather to the Oyster Festival to compete for the title of North Carolina Oyster Shucking Champion and a trip to the National Oyster Shucking Championship in Maryland.  Past winners have  have gone on to compete in the World Oyster Shucking Championships in Galway, Ireland.

Oyster Stew Cook-off: You can be the judge of who has the best oyster stew in Brunswick County! Come join the fun on Sunday, October 18at noon, purchase one of the limited tickets and have your taste of oyster stew from several local cooks and chefs. Tickets will go on sale at 10:00 a.m.; only 300 tickets will be sold.

Surf Contest: Saturday, October 18.  Surf contest is FREE for any and all surfers. Contest starts at 9:00 a.m.  Sign-up on the beach to the right of the pier at 8:00 a.m.  Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.  Free Surf Contest T-shirt with registration.  Prizes will be awarded to top finishers.
